Description

Classic Tiramisu is a traditional Italian dessert made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and a rich mascarpone cheese mixture, topped with cocoa powder.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/2 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 3 large eggs, separated
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese (room temperature)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24 ladyfinger cookies (savoiardi)
  • Cocoa powder for dusting
  • Dark chocolate shavings for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, combine the cooled brewed coffee and coffee liqueur (if using). Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and granulated sugar together until the mixture is pale and creamy, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the mascarpone cheese to the egg yolk mixture and gently fold until smooth and well combined.
  4. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Carefully fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully incorporated.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the mascarpone mixture, being careful not to deflate the mixture.
  6. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are soaked but not soggy. Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9×13 inch dish.
  7. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the layer of ladyfingers. Repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone mixture.
  8. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to set.
  9. Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder and garnish with dark chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the coffee liqueur and add a splash of vanilla extract to the coffee.
  • Experiment with different flavors by adding a layer of chocolate ganache or fruit puree between the layers for a unique twist.
