Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake tin.
  2. Combine the pitted dates with boiling water in a medium bowl and soak for about 15 minutes, then mash into a smooth consistency.
  3. Cream together softened unsalted butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then blend in the mashed dates.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix into the wet ingredients alternating with milk.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and cream. Stir continuously until it boils, allow to bubble for about 2 minutes.
  8. Once baked, let the cake cool for 10 minutes in the tin, then invert onto a serving plate and drizzle with warm toffee sauce.
