Ingredients

For the Crust
  • ½ cup Unsalted Butter Provides richness and moisture; substitute with margarine for dairy-free option.
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour Acts as main structure; can substitute with gluten-free flour.
  • cup Confectioners’ Sugar Sweetens crust; granulated sugar can work but different texture.
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch Prevents crust from becoming too hard.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Adds warmth and flavor; use vanilla bean paste for intense flavor.
  • ½ teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor and balances sweetness.
For the Filling
  • 2 tablespoons Light-Colored Corn Syrup Adds sweetness; avoid dark corn syrup.
  • 1 tablespoon Water No substitutes required.
  • ¾ cup Granulated Sugar Sweetens filling; brown sugar adds flavor depth.
  • 2 large Eggs Provides structure and moisture.
  • ¾ cup Semi-Sweet Mini Chocolate Chips Delivers chocolate flavor; mini hold better in filling.

  • 8-inch Square Baking Pan
  • mixing bowl
  • stand mixer

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil and lightly coat it with cooking spray.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine unsalted butter, all-purpose flour, confectioners’ sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until it forms a soft dough, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Press the dough into the bottom of the prepared pan, smooth the surface, and pierce with a fork. Bake for 12-13 minutes until just set.
  4. While the crust is baking, whisk together corn syrup, water, and vanilla extract. In another bowl, beat softened butter, granulated sugar, and salt until creamy. Incorporate eggs and flour mixture, then fold in chocolate chips.
  5. Pour the filling over the crust, spread evenly, and bake for 23-25 minutes until the edges are set.
  6. Let cool in the pan for at least 2 hours before slicing into squares.
