Step-by-Step Instructions for Apple Slab Pie
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water until dough comes together. Divide dough in half, shape into disks, wrap, and chill for at least 2 hours.
  2. Prepare the apple filling by peeling and chopping apples. Toss with lemon juice, sugar, cornstarch, and spices. Set aside for 15-20 minutes to allow juices to develop.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out larger disk of dough and place in a parchment-lined jelly roll pan. Pour apple mixture into the crust and cover with second rolled-out disk, sealing edges and cutting slits for steam.
  4. Brush the top crust with heavy cream or beaten egg. Bake for 40-45 minutes until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly.
  5. Cool for at least 45 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.
